Financial Principles in the Bible

The Bible has a lot to say about money and financial principles. Below are a few scriptures that deal with Money by category. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list!  If you'd like to see more, check out the Bible verses about money list from Christian Personal Finance.

Co-Signing a Loan

" A man lacking in judgment strikes hands in pledge and puts up security for his neighbor.” Proverbs 17:18

Debt

"The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender." Proverbs 22:7

"Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest.” 2 Kings 4:7

Diversification

"Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land." Ecclesiastes 11:2

Financial Planning

"For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying 'This man began to build and was not able to finish'?" Luke 14:28–30

" A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children,” Proverbs 13:22a

Financial Integrity

"Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow." Proverbs 13:11

"Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight." Proverbs 11:1

Giving

"God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7

"Honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first of all your produce; So your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will overflow with new wine." Proverbs 3:9-10

"but the righteous give without sparing." Proverbs 21:26

"Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return." Luke 6:38

Savings

"Go to the ant, O sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which, having no chief, officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer and gathers her provision in the harvest." Proverbs 6:6–8

Taxes

"They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s."
Matthew 22:21
