Personal Finance Journey Readers, I am…

by Mike on June 25, 2010

….well, before I get to that, those that follow this blog via RSS or the newsletter may remember subtle allusions to upcoming life changes and announcements later this year.

Those that keenly follow my weekly round-ups may have noticed a pattern for me highlighting articles that had to do with pre-martial money issues, money management for newly married couples, and ways to improve your marriage / money relationship.

Now that it is official, I want to share with you all that I am engaged!

In past articles, I’ve referred to the S.O. (that is significant other), or Mr. A which would be Minister Anthony.

This is a picture of us together on my 30th birthday:

This is definitely a pleasant turn in my journey.

The level of transparency when discussing personal finance matters pertaining to marriage and engagement will depend on Anthony and my mutual comfort level. I have plenty of topics to cover!

This is probably one of the reasons I enjoy reading Punch Debt in the Face. Ninja and Girl Ninja are engaged to be married and he shares their stories with comedy and flare.

Also, don’t worry about this turning into a wedding / engagement blog. We are sticking to matters pertaining to personal finance, Biblical truths, and Biblical truths about finance!

Here are a couple of money/marriage blogs I’ve been following for a while:

Couple Money
DINKS Finance (DINKS = Dual Income No Kids)

What about you? What financial advice would you offer someone about to get married?

What a beautiful couple you make! Congratulations.
My advice: Have the “money talk” several times before marrying, and a few times a year thereafter. Talk about goals and dreams and come up with do-able ways to achieve them. Look at potential purchases and expenditures with an eye toward those shared goals. Check back in every so often to see where you are financially.
This is purposely vague advice, because the two of you will have to find the best ways to do it all, from the initial money talk on.
Again, congratulations and God bless you both.

Hi Lakita,
Congratulations on the man, the house and the healing. I know that there is still hope for me and a mate. You all just keep making it true. If you hold on it is bound to come. Life and more abundance.
Sooo Happy for you both.

Congratulations, Lakita! This is great news.

My financial advice would be the same for any other area of marriage: Submit to God’s will and realize that in everything you do in your marriage, you are really ministering to each other. Talk about EVERYTHING, be humble, honest and self-controlled!

Good point Khaleef,

When you realize its ministry the principals apply across the board.

Lakita that is such great news…CONGRATULATIONS! The best part is that it seems as though you both are MORE THAN interested in doing this together. You have a much needed head start because of that. You two make a great looking couple btw!

May both of you nail this money thing and be the example to other couples just starting out. Lord knows, it’s the money thing that troubles a lot of marriages. Jason’s advice above is spot on!!

Again, I am so very happy to hear your wonderful announcement! How long do you have before the BIG DAY? 🙂

Congrats on the wonderful news! I’m so happy you’re going into upcoming marriage with both your heart and head. My one piece of financial advice would be to be open and honest with each other. No shame, no blame – try to come up with a plan for your money as a couple.

Congratulations Lakita!!! That’s great news, I wish the two of you all the best.

The financial advice I’d share would be to understand where the each of you are with your finances today (I’m sure you’ve already done this one). Discuss how you plan to manage your money as a married couple, layout your financial goals together and work towards them as one.

14 Jason @ One Money Design June 26, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Lakita, I’m very happy for you and Anthony! Congratulations!!! You’re bringing back great memories for me. Jennifer and I just celebrated our 8 year anniversary this year. You probably could guess my advice and you probabaly don’t need it. Put God first in your marriage. God is the glue that will bond you together. If you do this you’re marriage can survive anything. You’ll have a solid foundation for money matters, children someday and a wonderful life ahead together!
