Buyer Beware of Free Credit Score Offers

by Mike on April 12, 2010

While I was out of town last week, I saw a commercial for advertising Free Credit Score. The Consumerism Commentary recently reported that the Free Credit Score company (the one with the catchy jingles), no longer offers free credit scores….they cost $1.

While the fact that you’ll be automatically enrolled in their credit monitoring programs after 7 days if you don’t cancel, only time will tell if they have learned their lessons from the hefty settlement with the FTC. More importantly, I hope consumers have learned to be wary of anything free that wants your credit card information!

You are entitled to one free credit report per year, get it from the right source:

Currently, there is no federal mandate for your credit score. I hope this changes, but in the mean time, you can use Credit Karma to get an estimated score. If you want your real score, you’ll need to pay for it or take your chances with one of the “free” companies.
