No one mentioned my favorite way to prevent overdraft fees… close your account and move all your savings and investments to either a credit union or online bank that doesn’t charge criminal 3,520% overdraft fees (while stating your reason for leaving loud enough for everyone else to hear as you leave). If enough people did this, such fees would soon be but a faint memory. One person, two feet – use them.

@ PF Journey – It’s not that much of a hassle since I’m sure I’d be watching my bank balance like a hawk if I thought there was a real chance of me overdrawing my account. I only look at my checking account about once a week. Otherwise, you’d better be believe, I’d be watching it everyday.

It’s always better to transfer the money yourself than to have to pay an overdraft fee! That’s a lot of juggling but sounds like you have a system in place.

My method for avoiding overdrafts might be a little controversial. I use my credit card almost exclusively. Rarely do withdrawals beyond rent and credit card payments hit my checking account. I do a quick budget calculation before I pay my credit card bill to make sure I have a decent amount of cash in my account after I pay my rent. If not, I’ll transfer money from my savings account. This usually isn’t an issue since I don’t pay off my credit card balance until right after I get paid. Speaking of which…

Your right, in fact, success in personal finance can probably be summed up as “spend less than you earn”

I use alerts and the buffer method to make sure we don’t overdraft. Really the key to not overdrafting your account is to not spend more money than you have, plain and simple. Patrick is right, I only see 6.

Great tips. I personally use the buffer system, even though it means slightly less interest at the end of the day. Btw, I only count 6 tips.
